Pfizer Inc. will be the first to test the new Viagra and its rival generic, the little blue pill.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns over the safety and efficacy of the pill, which could cause heart problems, stroke, or death in people taking it.
Pfizer's patent on Viagra, which expires in March, expires in the United States on January 27. The pill, which is the active ingredient in the first drug to win approval from the Food and Drug Administration, is the latest attempt by Pfizer to test and market a new treatment for erectile dysfunction.
The pill is the first of its kind, which means that men can try and have sex with anyone who looks at them in the same way a woman does.
Patients are not required to carry a prescription to use the new drug. But some doctors, including Pfizer's president and chief executive, Pascal Soriot, have concerns about Pfizer's safety and effectiveness.
The news comes just days after a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that men on Viagra, who were about to start taking the pill, were nearly four times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke in the next six months than men on placebo pills.
Pfizer is testing the pill on more than 100 million men worldwide. But the results of the study are mixed, with some reports suggesting that the drug is not as effective as the placebo pills.
Viagra and its generic rival, the little blue pill, work by enhancing blood flow to the penis, which helps men get and keep an erection. But some doctors have raised concerns about its safety and efficacy, including Soriot, about how many men will experience side effects from taking the drug.
"The side effects reported were very mild in most cases," said Dr. Ian k. Hirsch, an urologist and head of clinical research at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. "They did not require medical attention and patients in the study did not require medical attention."
Viagra is approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men over the age of 50.
The drug has yet to be tested in the United States. But some men who have tried Viagra for years have reported success with the pill.
In addition to being a new treatment for erectile dysfunction, the drug belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
Unlike older drugs, the new drug works by increasing blood flow to the penis when a man is sexually aroused, a process that can lead to erection problems.
Although Viagra and its generic rival are available without a prescription, some doctors believe the new drug is more effective in treating erectile dysfunction than older treatments.
Pfizer's chief executive, Pascal Soriot, said: "Pfizer has a long record of safety and efficacy in treating erectile dysfunction and we continue to monitor this progress closely."

ennem/images/media/ copyrighted_media_photos_18.New York, NY: AstraZeneca PLC, a British biopharmaceutical company, today announced the launch of Viagra, a new treatment for erectile dysfunction that combines sildenafil (Viagra®) with tadalafil (Cialis®) to enhance sexual performance and reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction. Viagra is one of the most prescribed treatments for erectile dysfunction in the UK and is available over the counter without prescription.
“As Pfizer continues to explore new applications in the realm of pharmaceuticals, we are excited to offer Viagra as a new treatment for erectile dysfunction,” said Pfizer’s chairman and Chief Executive Officer, John Pecsimi. “We have recently launched our first-of-its-kind treatment for erectile dysfunction, which will allow us to offer men and their partners the opportunity to achieve their sexual goals when taking Viagra.”
Pfizer’s Viagra contains sildenafil citrate, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor that enhances blood flow to the penis, enabling a man to achieve and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated. The treatment is effective for up to 36 hours, providing men with a natural response to sexual stimulation. Men taking Viagra will be able to experience improved sexual performance and sexual satisfaction with their partner’s ability to achieve and maintain an erection.
“Today’s launch marks a significant milestone in Pfizer’s efforts to bring innovative treatments to the market, providing men and their partners the opportunity to overcome their erectile dysfunction and improve their quality of life,” said Pfizer’s chairman and Chief Executive Officer, David Brennan. “This new treatment for erectile dysfunction will provide an important new option for men and their partners who may not respond well to previous therapies or who may have other health challenges.”
The Viagra, Pfizer’s fastest growing segment, is led by the leading name brand, Eli Lilly and Company. The company’s patent for sildenafil expired in Europe, opening its patent portfolio to other companies and is now in the process of finalizing the company’s European patent application. Viagra is available without a prescription in the UK, as well as the USA and other countries around the world.
